Normally, to sum up the beauty that is the Whitsundays, I would splash around brilliant blue for the cloudless sky, sparkling turquoise for the shimmering ocean and pale yellow for the powder-like sand.

However, the Whitsundays is more than just a beautiful tourist destination for selfie-takers and bikini-clad Instagram models.

It is a complex ecosystem with thousands of animals and plants, many of which are endangered.

Unfortunately, in 2017, tropical cyclone “Debbie” hit the Whitsundays causing untold devastation to this ecosystem.

Inspired from a holiday photo in 2019, this enormous, completely uprooted tree is one such victim, now laying on the pristine white silica sands of Tongue Bay, Whitsunday Island.

This striking graphite drawing captures the stark reality of relentless natural disasters and the carnage left in their wake.

Thanks to the costly clean-up effort, much of the essential island infrastructure and homes have been repaired. But drawings such as this remind us the fragile ecosystem including trees, reefs, birds and other animal life, are on a long road to recovery.
